"I get restless if I'm not working on some sort of fiction project, or composition, or playing music. That’s what drives me. It’s not really a choice.

My concentrations are music and modern studies. I’m still trying to figure out what my thesis is, but I think I’ll be looking at the music of Weimar Germany within the tumultuous religious and political atmosphere of the time. I want to explore the elements that began to fuel fascism, and the role technological innovations played in such a volatile artistic and political environment.

I’ll plan on taking an extensive look at the music of Kurt Weill. He’s most famous for the Threepenny Opera, which is a social critique. Weill started adding popular elements of jazz and cabaret music to his work and then merged these pop features with a very atonal, high-art composition. Later, he collaborated with Brecht and together they created this far-left social vision. I don’t know where my thesis will go though. There is definitely some sort of pattern to all of this; I just can’t say exactly what it is yet."
