Alumni Leadership Council

The Alumni Leadership Council supports the mission of Simon’s Rock as goodwill ambassadors, with specific initiatives in recruitment, fundraising, event organizing and alumni outreach. Also, the ALC serves as a liaison between alumni, College administrators, and the Simon’s Rock Board of Overseers.

Some projects that ALC members work on include:

  • Leading career affinity groups for alumni
  • Selecting alumni to receive the Simon’s Rock Outstanding Alumni Award
  • Conducting elections for alumni representatives to the ALC
  • Leading regional alumni social chapters
  • Fundraising to support Simon’s Rock and its students
  • Recruiting prospective Simon’s Rock students
  • Publishing Simon's Rock Magazine
  • Producing annual reunion celebrations

Nicole Fitting ’93 JA, Co-Chair
Nicole Fitting Committees: Regional Chapters, Governance
Nicole recently stepped down as the chair of the ALC in order to pursue her Master's in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In the future, she hopes to become a professor and continue her desires to teach, research and provide SLP services. She enjoys keeping in touch with Rockers and building new connections.

 

Jochai Ben-Avi ‘06, Co-Chair

Jochai graduated from Simon’s Rock with a BA in Social Psychology and Political Science (of the Law, Politics, and Society variety). As a student he sought to raise the level of representation on campus, serving as the Senior Representative to the Board of Overseers, a member of the Anti-Harassment and Anti-Defamation Committee, and twice on the Standards & Procedures Committee. He has continued to advocate for students current and former as a member of the ALC since 2013, where he heads the ALC's Career Services Committee. By day, Jochai is the Policy Director at Access (AccessNow.org), an international NGO that extends and defends the digital rights of users at risk around the world.

 

Charlotte Anderholt ‘01

Charlotte graduated from Simon's Rock with a BA in Politics, Law, & Society. After a few years of PhD coursework in political theory at Georgetown University, she decided to move on to other things. Since then she has worked as a consultant on measures of progress in post-conflict environments at the U.S. Institute of Peace, and written on gender issues in peacekeeping for the U.S. Army's Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute. She currently lives in New Haven, CT with her spouse and two young children, Jasper and Theodora.

 

Keith Brierley-Bowers ‘80
Keith Bowers Committees: Representative to the Board of Overseers, Recruiting
Keith resides in the Baltimore area with Penny ’81, they have two daughters: Perri ’08 and Kori ’12. He works for BGE HOME running Business Process, IT and sustainability endeavors for the organization. He is also on the board as Treasurer of the Fire Museum of Maryland. Keith earned a MA in I/O Psychology from West Chester University and an Executive MBA from Johns Hopkins.

 

Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez ‘78

Jennifer earned her BA in English and Journalism from Simon's Rock and her MA and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from New York University. After receiving her doctorate in 1994, she began teaching at Simon's Rock, specializing in world literature by women, gender studies and media studies. She also taught a humanities seminar at the State University at Albany for nine years, from 2002-2011. She has published two anthologies, Women Writing Resistance in Latin America and the Caribbean (South End Press, 2004) and African Women Writing Resistance (University of Wisconsin Press, 2011), the latter co-edited with two Simon's Rock alums, Pauline Dongala and Omotayo Jolaosho. She founded the Berkshire Festival of Women Writers, a month-long, county-wide celebration of women writers in the Berkshires, after more than a decade of organizing a major annual conference at Simon's Rock in observance of International Women's Day. Jenny is the mother of two boys: Nico Hernandez '08, who graduated from Simon's Rock at age 19 with his B.A. in Environmental Studies and is now a grad student in Marine Conservation and Policy at SUNY Stonybrook; and Eric Hernandez, a 9th grader.

 

Evelina Burnett ‘93

Evelina Burnett attended Simon's Rock from 1993 to 1995. She is currently the Gulf Coast reporter for Mississippi Public Broadcasting. She lives in Pass Christian, Miss., where from 2006 to 2013 she was the editor and publisher of the Pass Christian Gazebo Gazette. Her previous experience includes banking and insurance coverage for Dow Jones Newswires in London; technology reporting for the Atlanta Business Chronicle in Atlanta, Ga.; freelance work for a number of publications, including the Wall Street Journal; and a one-year journalism fellowship that took her to Cairo, Egypt. She received her B.A. in English from Swarthmore College and an M.S. in journalism from Columbia University.

Christopher Derhammer-Hill ‘86
Christopher Derhammer-Hill ‘86 Committees:

Christopher is a member of the Board of Overseers, and has been engaged as an active alumni leader and contributor to the College for more than a decade. He joined the Alumni Leadership Council in 2003, and served as its co-chair from 2008 to 2010. He served as Alumni Representative to the Board of Overseers from 2008 to 2012.

Christopher entered the Simon's Rock in Fall 1986, graduating with a B.A. in the Languages and Literature division. He then spent several years working as an Environmental Planner before transitioning into Information Technology. He holds the role of Sales Consulting Director at Oracle today, managing technical staff throughout North America. Christopher and his wife Cordelia Derhammer-Hill met as first years and now live with their two children in Mamaroneck, New York.

 

Cordelia Derhammer-Hill ‘86

Cordelia finished her AA at Simon's Rock and her BA at Sarah Lawrence College, then later went into professional fundraising. Now she is a full-time mother who spends her time volunteering as a naturalist, girl scout leader, active PTA member and advocate for a special-needs child. She has been involved with Simon's Rock alumni endeavors since the late 1990s along with her her husband, whom she met in her first weeks at Simon's Rock.

Audrey Kalman ’77

Audrey received a B.A. in creative writing from SR in 1981, followed by an M.A. in magazine journalism from Syracuse University, and has written professionally for more than 30 years. She held various corporate marketing jobs through the 1990s. In 2003, she began a second career as a birth doula, supporting women and families during labor and birth. Her novel (Dance of Souls, available from Amazon) was published in 2011. She’s interested in helping to get an affinity group for writers started through the ALC. Audrey lives in northern California with her husband, two children, and two cats. She blogs about writing at http://audreykalman.wordpress.com and is putting the finishing touches on another novel.

 

Kaki Notestine Kasdorf ‘93

After graduating from Simon's Rock, Kaki obtained her JD from Boston College. She practiced law in her home town for seven years, specializing in family law and estate administration. Deciding that the drama of a full-time family law practice was not compatible with a happy personal life, she made a career change and went to work for Colorado State University supporting their Development efforts as a prospect researcher. In 2011, she joined the Development team at Interlochen Center for the Arts where she is the Grants & Research Manager. Kaki lives in northern Michigan with her husband, Jason.

 

Harry Marker ’05
Committees: Regional Chapters, Career Services
Harry graduated with a BA from Simon's Rock in 2009. Since then, he has bartended, eaten whale in Iceland, ridden a Segway, and thought about maybe going ice fishing (some day). He is currently living in New York and goofing around as much as possible without getting fired, and writing in his spare time.
