Major Gifts Officer

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Major Gifts Officer will join a savvy, productive, results-oriented development team. He/she will be responsible for building a portfolio of 150 high net worth prospects and for raising five and six figure gifts from that group. Working closely with parents, alumni, friends and annual fund colleagues, the MGO will be responsible for all phases of the fundraising cycle: qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding. The goal is for this position to secure gifts of $10,000 and above, with an annual goal in the first year of $500,000 to $1,000,000.

The prospects will primarily be based in the NYC tri-state area with additional prospects in major urban areas across the nation. The successful candidate could be based in the NYC area, with a goal of 3-5 visits per week, or if based on campus in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, will travel a minimum of a week each month, securing and managing individual meetings with 12-15 high net-worth individuals monthly.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelors degree, three years of experience as a fundraiser, experience developing and managing long-term relationships, a strong track record of soliciting and closing, excellent written and oral communication skills, willingness to travel, and at times, work outside of normal business hours, including weekends. An advanced degree and experience in a higher education or similarly complex setting is a plus.

In addition, the successful candidate will have the skills to shape and be shaped by an evolving program; the ability to keep the big picture sharply in focus while attending to small details; the experience using data to evaluate and plan. He/she will be an excellent critical thinker with strong interpersonal and communication skills, will possess a high degree of initiative, flexibility, creativity, and will have a good sense of humor.
