Entertainment journalist Martha Frankel to talk about her memoir this Thursday at Simon’s Rock
GREAT BARRINGTON, MA –- Well-known entertainment journalist Martha Frankel will visit Simon’s Rock on Thursday, March 13, to talk about Hats & Eyeglasses, a memoir that was recently released by Tarcher/Penguin.
Hats & Eyeglasses, A Family Love Affair with Gambling, takes readers through her experiences with cards and gambling. Frankel grew up in a family of “die-hard gamblers, where her father’s poker games and her mother’s mah jongg mingled with big pots of delicious food and endless gossip and storytelling.” The memoir is about her experience with all types of gambling, from poker to online gambling, including her eventual addition to online gambling. The title, Hats & Eyeglasses, refers to a term used by the Frankel family when they were losing so badly they felt their ship had sunk, and all they could see were hats and eyeglasses floating on the surface.
Frankel went to the University of Miami, and dropped out when her advisor told her she would have to be an English teacher. Years later she met Annie Flanders, who had just started Details magazine, and who invited Frankel to write for her. She interviewed celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor, Robert De Niro, Roman Polanski, Juliette Binoche, and many others. She also wrote a first person column about breast reduction, as part of a longer series titled “Knifestyles of the Rich and Famous.”
In addition to Details, her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Fashions of The New York Times, Redbook, and Cosmopolitan. For 15 years, she has co-hosted Woodstock Roundtable, a Sunday radio show, in Woodstock, N.Y. She was a Philip Morris Fellow at The Mac Dowell Colony in 1997, and a 2003 Artist-in-Residence at SUNY Ulster, where she taught a class in memoir writing.
Frankel will talk with students and others on Thursday, March 13 at 7 p.m., in the Livingston Hall Student Union. The talk is free and the public is welcome.
