GREAT BARRINGTON, MA— Bard College at Simon’s Rock announces that on July 4th, 2011, Fast Feet, a new group of runners ranging in age from 32 to 70, will compete in Berkshire Medical Center's annual 5K (3.1 miles) Run. This race, which is sanctioned by USA Track and Field New England, will take place along the parade route before Pittsfield's Independence Day Parade.
In March 2011, Pittsfield resident Rebecca Hunter created the Fast Feet program at Simon's Rock College's Kilpatrick Athletic Center, where she is the Fitness Director. A marathon runner, Hunter wanted to give reluctant runners a chance to stick with a program and remain motivated. Many beginners try to do too much too fast, so Hunter developed a unique program that provided "a coach early on and a group that can keep you motivated."
Open to both beginners and experienced runners, Fast Feet meets twice a week. Ten of the nineteen members are over the age of fifty. When they began, most of the runners could run for only a minute at a time. Now they all run over three miles at a time.
Each week, the group focuses on a topic that can help improve the running experience. Fast Feet runner Michael Ury, who is turning seventy and had not run since his Army days, now runs over three miles at a time and is looking forward to the July 4th race. For Carmen Brown, a mother of three who works at night and attends nursing school, Fast Feet is a sort of therapy. At first she ran out of breath after running only 90 seconds but soon found it "difficult to stay on the couch" because she had made a commitment to the team. According to Hunter, “Fast Feet members have developed quite a bit of team work and support for each other. They have become friends in the process.”
Fifty-three year old Jim Czarnecki has been running almost all of his life. He ran the San Francisco Bay to Breakers Race four times (in the late 1980s), the BMC Independence Day Run four times (over the past five years), and the Lenox Loop Race (this year). He believes that if he had had the Fast Feet training prior to those races, he would have recorded much better times and would have been less drained physically. Czarnecki says he is a better runner now than he was in his twenties.
On July 4th, look for the Fast Feet team wearing t-shirts displaying a sneaker spewing a huge flame!
