Assistant Technical Director (Summer Only)

Bard Academy and Bard College at Simon’s Rock, located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, seeks an Assistant Technical Director to support the Director of the Daniel Arts Center and Technical Director with day-to-day operations in the Daniel Arts Center. During the summer months, the campus facilities are rented to external organizations. The Assistant Technical Director will be a key member of the staff supporting these summer programs, including a professional theater group with a busy schedule of public performances.

Reporting to the Director of the Daniel Arts Center, the Assistant Technical Director performs the following duties:

  • Assist the Technical Director and Director of the DAC with day-to-day tasks and operations including maintaining equipment and spaces, managing and organizing inventory, and preparing spaces for use.
  • Assist with overseeing and supporting the summer rentals in the DAC theaters and related spaces.
  • Assist with overseeing all performances, events, lectures, and concerts in the DAC ensuring events run successfully and safely.
  • Monitor and maintain first aid kits, eye wash stations, and shop safety equipment.
  • Alert the Technical Director and Director of the DAC to order any equipment or tools needed to maintain the shop and DAC.
  • Assist with maintenance of spaces and equipment as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of all standard theater production systems such as lighting, scenery, costumes, sound, and projections.
  • 3–5 years of experience in a multi-venue theater facility, or related experience.
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb and work at heights such as, on the grids above the stages, as well as the box booms, working on ladders and electric lifts.
  • Must be comfortable using Microsoft Office (Excel specifically).

Preferred Qualifications

  • ETC training to help maintain equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of single purchase fly systems preferred.
  • OSHA training preferred.
  • CAD program knowledge a plus (Vectorworks preferred).

The successful candidate will have strong organizational and time management skills, a strong sense of teamwork, and an ability to communicate effectively and courteously with a diverse community. The Assistant Technical Director will be expected to take input from others, solve problems in a collaborative manner, and make decisions quickly without compromising the safety of people and equipment.
