IT System Administrator

The System Administrator maintains, upgrades, and supports servers and systems. The System Administrator will perform day-to-day support operations as well as investigate and implement new technologies and solutions. The System Administrator is responsible for ensuring that the servers are backed up appropriately, that the operating systems are appropriately upgraded and patched, and that servers remain robust and reliable.

Statement of Authority

The primary responsibilities of this position directly relate to the academic mission and general business of the College. The exercise of discretion and independent judgment is required. The System Administrator reports to the Director of Instructional Technology.

Function

  • Configure, manage, deploy and administer linux virtual hosts via KVM (virtualization software, the full name of which is Kernel-based Virtual Machine) so that virtual servers can be run on top of these server platforms.
  • Administer both bare-metal and virtual systems and servers including Linux, Windows, and Mac OS/X
  • Administer and support the services running on servers such as email, web services, DNS, LDAP, and DHCP
  • Investigate, test, and implement server hardware and software technologies – including but not limited to network applications, software, anti-spam, anti-virus, and mal-ware software; coordinate closely with Network Administrator and other Information Technology staff
  • Maintain data required for server/network services such as LDAP and DNS
  • Develop backup scripts, perform production system backups, and manage backup media
  • Ensure that monitoring software is tuned and augmented as new software/hardware is rolled into production
  • Stay abreast of new technologies to facilitate identification, selection and implementation of infrastructure solutions that will enable maximum interoperability and functionality
  • Maintain a clean and orderly environment with complete documentation and free from hazards to safety and access
  • Document procedures, systems upgrades, programming modifications, and other related activities to ensure continuity of services
  • Educate the College community in the proper, secure, and effective use of servers and network resources
  • Represent Bard College at Simon’s Rock to vendors and external colleagues
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

Horizontal and Outside Relationships

Reports to the Director of Instructional Technology; works closely with Network Administrator and other Information Technology staff in the investigation, selection, maintenance, and deployment of hardware and software technologies; works with and communicates with members of the college community including faculty, staff, and students; works closely with outside vendors and collaborates with colleagues from other institutions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates or Bachelor’s Degree (in Computer Science or related field) desirable; related experience may be considered in lieu of degree
  • Experience investigating, testing, implementing, and supporting both hardware and software technology solutions
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP networking protocols and services such as email, Apache webserver, DNS, LDAP, and DHCP
  • Demonstrated Linux system administration experience required (Red Hat, Fedora core or GNU/Debian Linux highly desirable)
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (VMWare, Hyper-V or KVM)
  • Experience with intrusion protection/detection systems, Cloud technologies, configuration management software desirable
  • Prior experience working in a college setting desirable; ability to work proactively in a small team of dedicated IT professionals; ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with a wide range of staff and users
  • Ability to occasionally work outside of regular business hours for maintenance or emergency activities
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal skills
