Daniel Arts Center - Hillman-Jackson Gallery

Simon's Rock sculpture faculty Chris Domenick presents Castles, a site-specific installation of sculpture opening April 25, 2019. In collaboration with Simon's Rock sculpture students, Domenick explores the inherent hierarchies and design conditions within the framework of chess.

For this exhibition, Domenick has converted the Hillman-Jackson Gallery in the Daniel Arts Center into a 15 x 24 foot chess board. Each playing piece is designed and welded from steel by Simon's Rock sculpture students in an effort to imagine a contemporary manifestation of chess. This adaptation of the modern game of chess, the rules of which date back to medieval feudalism and warrior nobility, considers the rank and maneuverability of each playing piece and its metaphorical equivalent in modern society. Modified form and function reflect the translation of their roles between past and present, raising questions surrounding the evolution of socio-political structures and the ways in which participants are physically represented in a time when government and war sometimes feel like a game played by those in power.

The following students crafted the chess pieces for this exhibit:

ALL CHESS PLAYERS ARE ARTISTS." -MARCEL DUCHAMP
