Winter Concert, Part 2: SR Quartet, Dvorak
Thursday, December 12, 2019
Kellogg Music Center
The Simon's Rock String Quartet will perform Quartet no. 12 in F major, op. 96, by Antonin Dvorak. Written while Dvorak was visiting the United States between 1892 and 1895, the quartet has been nicknamed "the American." The nickname comes from the quartet's melodic style, which is reminiscent of the music of Black and Native American cultures as Dvorak encountered them while visiting the United States.
The all-student Simon's Rock String Quartet is a self-organized ensemble that has been meeting regularly since September 2019, and has developed a repertory of works by Haydn, Beethoven, Fanny Mendelssohn, and now Dvorak. Members include: Ella Menees, first violin; Daniel Rose-Levine, second violin; Katie Rumin, viola; and Julian White, cello.
Free and open to the public.
