Lecture: Can the Chinese government green its construction industry?

Join us for a lecture with Yu Zhou, professor of Geography in the Department of Earth Science and Geography at Vassar College, entitled "Can the Chinese government green its construction industry? Lessons from an authoritarian state." This is the second of eight lectures planned this semester in the 12th Proseminar in Humanistic and Social Scientific Inquiry.

About the speaker:
Yu Zhou received her bachelor's and master's degrees in Urban and Environmental Sciences (formerly Geography) at Peking University in 1986 and 1989, and earned a Ph.D. in Geography at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 1995. Her research has focused on globalization and high-tech, urban sustainability in China, and the Chinese path of innovation. Zhou is the author of the book The inside story of China's high-tech industry: Making Silicon Valley in Beijing (Roman and Littlefield 2008), and co-editor of China as Innovation nation (Oxford University Press 2016). She also studied ethnic communities and transnational business networks in Los Angeles and New York. She is currently conducting research on green building development in Chinese cities.

Yu Zhou has published extensively in journals, including World Development, Journal of Economic Geography, Economic Geography, Urban Geography, Regional Studies, Environment and Planning A, and more. She is a recipient of several major national and international awards and grants, including NSF, Asian Network, Lincoln Institute, Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation, Pacific Cultural Foundation, and others. Zhou has also been selected as one of the Public Intellectual Fellows for 2008-2010 by the National Committee of United States-China Relations. She has also published blog entries in Huffington Post, China Beat, and ChinaAnalysis, to name a few, and been interviewed by the New York Times and Washington Post, among others.
