Summer Music at Simon's Rock, Part 3

The third musical offering of Summer Music at Simon's Rock is a video of the Simon's Rock String Quartet performing Antonin Dvorak's String Quartet no. 12 in F major, op. 96, "The American." This performance was recorded in concert on December 17, 2019.

Members of the Quartet at that time included:
Ella Menees, first violin
Daniel Rose-Levine, second violin
Katie Rumin, viola
Julian White, cello

The most popular of Dvorak's sixteen quartets, the "American" was composed in the summer of 1893 while Dvorak vacationed in a Czech colony in Spillville, Iowa. It is one of the highly popular works he composed while living in the United States and teaching at the New York Conservatory (later the Juilliard School) which included, among others, the "New World Symphony." This quartet contains three very high-spirited movements and one deeply mournful one. The themes are often pentatonic, which may reflect aspects of Czech folk music but equally Dvorak's impression of Native American music, to which he had access in Iowa. This is a challenging work that the Simon's Rock Quartet performs with skill, passion, and dedication.
