Bach Cello Suites on Viola: Part 2

Sunday, September 20, 2020

Virtual

Join us for Part 2 of a two-part series of Bach's Six Cello Suites! Performed by Ronald Gorevic, Simon's Rock violin and viola instructor and a frequent performer on campus, the concert will take place live at the Kellogg Music Center, with a virtual viewing option available for the public.

Each part of this series will consist of three suites. These works, almost unknown until they were revived in the 20th Century by cellist Pablo Casals, have become the cornerstone of the cello repertory. They fit the viola perfectly since it is essentially a cello that plays in a higher register--the string configuration is exactly the same. This manner of performance offers a lighter, more transparent image of these great works, and permits the dance rhythms that underlie most of the movements to emerge with greater clarity and incisiveness.

About Ronald Gorevic
Ronald Gorevic has had a long and distinguished career as a performer and teacher, on both the violin and viola. As a violist he has been a member of several well-known string quartets, spanning over twenty years, and covering most of the quartet repertoire. He has toured throughout the U.S., Germany, Japan, Korea, and Australia, and has also been broadcast on radio stations across the U.S., S. German, and S.W. German radio, and the Australian Broadcast network. As a violinist, Mr. Gorevic has performed recitals in major U.S. cities including New York, Chicago, Cleveland, and Atlanta. He has also performed in London, where he gave the British premieres of pieces by Donald Erb and Ned Rorem. Mr. Gorevic is a founding member of the Prometheus Piano Quartet, with which he has recorded piano quartets of Saint-Saens and D’Indy for Centaur. He has also recorded for Koch International and Crystal records. Mr. Gorevic is also currently on the faculty of Smith College, where he teaches both violin and viola.

Allan Hughes of the New York Times said the following about his performances: "Although Mr. Gorevic is a worthy performer with a commendable technique, he is a musician  first and foremost, one who does what he should when he should and whose faithfulness to the letter and spirit of the work at hand is not apt to be questioned."
