Faculty Recital: Mozart Violin Sonatas

Sunday, September 4, 2022

Daniel Arts Center - McConnell Theater

As the first installment of a project to perform all 19 violin sonatas of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart, Ronald Gorevic and Larry Wallach will presnt four works representing the major periods of Mozart's creativity in this genre: sonatas in D major (K. 306), G minor (K. 379), E minor (K. 304) and A major (K. 526). Mozart's production of violin sonatas served to create the template for the modern development of this form, leading to Beethoven's ten works and countless others by almost every major composer of the 19th and 20th centuries, and continuing in our own time.

More than simply a vehicle for the violin with a subordinate piano accompaniment, these works are true dialogues with full participation of both instruments. Each of the 19 sonatas has its own unique personality, and while some (such as the E minor) are familiar, the level of quality across this oeuvre is uniformly high.
