Manager of IT User Services

Bard College at Simon’s Rock seeks an experienced Manager of IT User Services for day-to-day support operations and to investigate and implement new software and hardware technologies and solutions.

The manager of IT User Services works closely with faculty, staff, and students to assist them in the effective use of technology and provides desktop software and hardware support. The manager of IT User Services hires, trains, and coordinates technical support staff and student Computer Assistants in providing helpdesk, user services, and media/audio visual tasks such as reception, hardware, and software troubleshooting, and writing documentation. The manager of IT User Services investigates, recommends, and purchases hardware and software solutions, and trains users in one on one, small group, and group settings. The manager is responsible for developing capital and operating budget projections and for planning future acquisition of equipment and services.


  • Leads and manages the selection, scheduling, and coordination of student Computer Assistants; trains Computer Assistants to provide proactive, quality service to the community
  • Leads and manages college technical support staff including hiring, training, and coordinating of the staff
  • Responsible for educating users in the performance of standard operations and tasks such as system maintenance and backups; develops tutorials and course content
  • Provide desktop software and hardware support
  • Manage investigate campus license agreements for software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc. as well as email clients and web applications; investigates new and emerging technologies
  • Provides analysis and troubleshooting expertise in the identification and resolution of problems; acts as front line for problem triage.
  • Writes documentation and web pages describing functionality and its uses on campus
  • Investigates video production methodologies and develops educational tools and resources for supporting and educating the college community
  • Investigates hardware solutions; recommends for purchase desktop, laptop, peripherals, and accessories; assists director in researching bulk purchase and leasing arrangements; develops relationships with vendors
  • Assists and educates users in the performance of standard operations and tasks such as system maintenance and backups; develops tutorials and course content
  • Maintains and manages tracking system for outstanding problems and tickets; maintains and updates accurate and comprehensive hardware and software inventory
  • Provides setup support and technical assistance in the use of audio visual/media equipment
  • Troubleshoots and supports office telephone equipment
  • Other duties and responsibilities as needed or assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical area or equivalent experience;
  • 4-6 years of related experience in user services, desktop support, helpdesk functions, and audio visual/media services;
  • relevant managerial/supervisory experience required;
  • technical experience in desktop software and hardware solutions;
  • knowledge of current programming languages and technology trends;
  • highly developed written, oral, and interpersonal skills;
  • Macintosh experience highly desirable but must be able to work in multivendor environment;
  • Position requires occasional weekend, holiday or night work including periodic on-call rotation;
  • Must be physically able to lift and carry 50 pounds;
  • Position involves necessity to work outside designated office in the execution of tasks and responsibilities.
