Business Models for Liberal Artists

Friday, November 6, 2015

Classroom 4, by Alumni Library

You're invited to a brown bag lunch.  You will be encouraged to think of yourself as capable of becoming an independent business entity.

The days of having cradle to grave employment and support are now gone for most of the working world. Life and income can be lumpy even for employees of established professions. The flattening of the world introduced lower cost international competition. Fiscal security often requires the ability to sell oneself. In short, people are paid for perceived value delivered. Having value propositions in mind when developing careers and authoring works is worthwhile, now that many ways traditional liberal artists earned a living are vanishing in our flattened digital age.

We will explore value proposition articulation to make each participant able to create a business plan. You may be wondering about the need for a value proposition expanded into a business plan, if not planning to start a business or search for investors? You already have investors whose expectations need to be managed. You, your parents, your teachers, and your bosses all invest considerably in your future. Many have already experienced what happens when people’s expectations are violated. This includes your own as you will always need to be the largest investor in yourself.

How can you set and manage expectations without knowing what value you intend to deliver or to whom you will deliver it? To create a business plan, one needs a business model, which in turn requires a value proposition. This rapid flyover is a one hour introduction to a set of concepts most liberal artists will need to explore and master in order to become fiscally secure in the future.
