Exploring worlds of space and time in music: from Debussy to "Slam" Stewart, from Jobim to Corelli.
After having come together to perform in the Winds in the Wilderness Concerts in Copake Falls, NY, the members of this quartet, who are all faculty members in the music program at Simon's Rock, are now sharing our bi-musical adventure with the Simon's Rock community  The concert begins with a fascinating sonata da chiesa by Arcangelo Corelli. The consistent abrupt transitions from the dominant major to the dominant minor, not very characteristic of the Baroque, give this piece a charming, unique quality.
Geographically, we cover four regions of the world in this concert, with South America represented by Argentinian composer Ginastera (with Sharon Powers and Judith Dansker playing his demanding but rewarding 'Duo for Flute and Oboe'),  and later on in the concert, Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, with a special arrangement of his “Estrada do Sol.”

Along with Corelli, Europe is represented by Debussy, whose exquisite ‘Sarabande,’ originally written for piano, is threaded through our blended winds and strings. Also, years before the days of the European Union, the cosmopolitan Spanish-French guitarist Fernando Sor, touring like the other virtuosi of his day, heard a production (probably in Italian) in London of Mozart’s “Magic Flute,” and was inspired by the tranquility-inducing aria  “Das klinget so herrlich” to write his solo guitar piece “Variations on a theme by Mozart,” which Sor published in 1821.

Finally, the USA is represented by two jazz pieces, the first including a very special tradition of jazz bass playing, with Pete Toigo channeling the approach of “Slam” Stewart, who was known for elaborate arco solos with soft octave doubling using his voice. In this case the form will come from the standard piece “I Should Care” (music by Sammy Cahn, 1941).  We will end the concert with Myers' piece 'Look In,' in 5/4 meter, with improvised solos.
