Campus Lichen Walk

Fisher Science Center, Front Doors

Lichens are compound organisms that are composed of a fungus and algae working together. This partnership is very successful, and lichens grow on all continents of the world, from the frozen tundra of Antarctica to the Amazonian rain forest. The temperate forests of eastern North America are home to hundreds of species of lichens, and on this walk we will observe and identify the lichens native to western Massachusetts. During the walk we will also discuss their ecology and evolution.

The walk will be led by lichenologist Jessica Allen, a PhD candidate at the City University of New York and The New York Botanical Garden.

We will meet in the lobby of the Fisher Science Building. Be prepared to walk in the woods (appropriate footwear recommended).

This event is being hosted by the Cool Sightings book project.
