News Literacy Roundtable

Tuesday, December 5, 2017

Alumni Library

The Alumni Library is hosting a roundtable on the topic of news literacy. What is news literacy, you ask? It is the ability to critically analyze news media, judging the reliability and credibility of information in its many forms (print, digital, visual, etc.). We will discuss the following questions: Where do we get our news information from? How do we think about it? Do we even think about it critically? Does our response change if it is something we agree with or if it challenges our existing beliefs? Is "fake news" really a new phenomenon?

Professors Jennifer Browdy (communications/media studies), Justin Jackson (history), Sam Ruhmkorff (philosophy), and Amanda Landi (mathematics/statistics) will address these issues as it relates to their disciplines, and the conversation will be facilitated by librarian Brian Mikesell.

Please bring questions and ideas! This conversation is open to everyone, and Participation & Service ACE credit is available.
