My Nudes 2k18: femininity and obscenity, thesis exhibition by Hayley Edgar, is an installation of photographs that question in what context society finds the female nude acceptable. With confrontational nude images of herself she challenges the traditional power dynamic of the gaze between model, photographer, and viewer. Displayed in a gallery, the female form is considered artful. However, in social media it is heavily censored. Hayley shoots with a large format 4x5 analog camera incorporating new media such as video and gifs to create contrast between the female nude as accepted in art history, and what is seen as vulgar and perverse in the public eye. Through this comparison, Hayley shows that censorship actually emphasizes the hypersexualization and fetishization of the female nude instead of suppressing it.
Opening reception will be March 25, 6-8pm in the DAC student gallery, with an artist talk at 6:30. Light refreshments will be served.
This event is free and open to the public.
