Virtual

Simons Rock alum Ethan Ackelsberg (Ohio State University) joins us in our monthly seminar to present his talk, "From the pigeonhole principle to ergodic Ramsey theory."

Ramsey theory is a branch of combinatorics based on the widespread phenomenon that certain mathematical structures (e.g., arithmetic progressions, complete graphs, convex polygons) inevitably appear on a large enough scale. Ergodic theory involves the study of the long-term statistical behavior of dynamical systems. Surprisingly, these two areas are connected in very deep ways. We will give a sampling of the amazing connections between ergodic theory and Ramsey theory, starting from one of the simplest results in all of mathematics: the pigeonhole principle.
