Chair in Music Larry Wallach to Perform Wind Quartet Composition

Hannah WheelerGREAT BARRINGTON, MA — Recently retired Simon’s Rock Chair in Music Larry Wallach will be performing a revision of his Wind Quartet composition on Sunday, March 9th at 3:00 p.m.

The performance is the final South Berkshire Concert to take place on the Simon’s Rock campus, a concert series that Wallach has directed for 52 years. Performers include members of the Hartford Symphony and the United States Marine Band. Wallach’s composition appears in a program of works including pieces performed by Francis Poulenc, as well as a piano performance by Visiting Faculty in Music Manon Hutton-DeWys.

“My piece is in four movements, with these titles: Pastoral, Scherzino, Elegy, and March,” said Wallach. “In addition to the normal configuration of the standard woodwind quintet — flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon — I use alternate instruments in different movements: alto flute, English horn, and bass clarinet. Each movement uses a different combination of instruments.”

Wallach’s composition was written in 2023 and revised in fall 2024.

This performance will take place in the McConnell Auditorium in the Daniel Arts Center. This event is free and open to the public.
