On Friday, September 29, 2017 the Bard College at Simon’s Rock community volunteered time in and around Great Barrington.
As part of the sixth annual Rock the Community: A Day of Service to Honor Emily Fisher, students, faculty, and staff worked with seniors at the public library, helped maintain nature trails, and cleaned up along the highway and river, among other activities.
Valerie Fanarjian, director of student activities at Simon’s Rock, has been an integral part of organizing the day since the first one in 2012. “The enthusiasm for Rock the Community has increased over the years, both by the participating organizations and our students, staff, and faculty. The projects we do have cemented some very important relationships and expanded in many ways, creating new opportunities for our students.”
Environmental Science Professor Tom Coote has been leading on-campus volunteer projects for Rock the Community since the inaugural event. This year, he helped students build an arbor on campus. “I have enjoyed running projects on campus and I am always pleasantly surprised at the positive energy of the students and the amount of work we accomplish in just a few hours. This one day points to a greater potential for the implementation of praxis across disciplines and across campus.”
