Bard College at Simon's Rock: the Early College

Pursue French & Francophone Studies

The French program offers courses from introductory to advanced levels, including literature and culture courses in French.

Students in French learn from the start to function in a French-speaking environment and gain insight into the cultures and customs of the Francophone world. All courses are taught via immersion.

The French faculty has a range of expertise in early modern French literature, food studies, linguistics, and cultural studies. We teach courses on topics from the Renaissance to the present day, and on the entire Francophone world.

Students who pursue the French Studies concentration are encouraged to spend at least a semester as a visiting student in a French-speaking country. Many programs are available and we will work with students to find the right match.

Students in French at Simon's Rock have opportunities to speak French outside the classroom, as well!

  • Table française (an informal conversational circle) is held in the dining hall at lunchtime throughout the semester.
