Bard College at Simon's Rock: the Early College

Art Studio As Sanctuary

Ben Krupka

Professor of Ceramics, Sculpture, 3D Design

In intro classes, I teach students a lot about methods. I want them to know enough about how to do something that they feel confident exploring their creative impulses. Later, I teach both method and allow them to discover their creative side.

I could have transferred to a big art school but I really like working with Ben. I like the setting and the studios, too.

— Peter ’07

There was a student I had who worked harder than anybody else in the class, but he was struggling. By the end of the semester, he not only learned how to make a pot, but he also made some of the best pots of any student who ever came here. He went on to graduate school, and now he’s doing something completely different in the arts that’s as equally brilliant as he was.
