Brown Bag Lunch: Exoplanets, Aliens, and God

Tuesday, October 30, 2018

Alumni Library

Join us and Professor Sam Ruhmkorff for a discussion about how we can make inferences about properties of extraterrestrials (if they exist) simply by observing ourselves. We will also discuss the implications of the existence of extraterrestrials for religion.

TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Spy Satellite) was launched in August. It will look for exoplanets in an area more than 400 times that searched by the Kepler telescope, which itself has discovered thousands of exoplanets. Future telescopes, e.g. the James Webb Space Telescope, will give us the ability to look for evidence of life in the atmospheres of exoplanets.

All are welcome, and we encourage you to bring your lunch!

P&S ACE credit is available.
