CLIMATE CONSTITUTIONALISM

Facilitator: Justin Jackson

7:00 - 8:00 pm

In recent years, Montana, Pennsylvania, and New York have adopted constitutional amendments by legislative enactment or referendum guaranteeing citizens' rights to a healthy environment, partly as a means to combat climate change. Today, Maine and nearly a dozen other states are considering similar measures. Other nations, such as Chile, are now considering revising their constitutions to grant similar legal and political rights to a healthy climate as a means to fight climate and change. This discussion will review these developments and the politics of climate change in constitutional terms, to consider how the transformation of political charters may or may not be an effective means for limiting and preventing climatological catastrophe. This event is open to all of the Simon’s Rock and Berkshire communities.
