Bard College at Simon’s Rock Photography Instructor Daniel Karp was invited to give a talk in March as an overview of the early history and pre-history of photography in partnership with David M. Hunt Library and their exhibition “From the Great Falls to the Hilltops: Early 20th Century Photography from the Falls Village-Canaan Historical Society.”
The exhibition, which is on display through May 3, 2024, celebrates local Falls Village and Canaan, CT photographs from the late 19th and early 20th century. In addition to chronologizing the technical evolution of the medium up until the early 20th century, Karp also shared the history of glass slide photography — a photographic method used in the mid 1800s to the 1940s, as well as the origins of the “idea” of photography and capturing an image created by light.
He also explained the first technical processes that made this possible, demonstrated how they might have been used by photographers of the time, and showed examples of various early photographs and cameras.
