Preparing Images for the Web

Images should be optimized for the web before uploading to the CMS. Failure to optimize images can significantly slow down page load time. And slower pages can lead to significantly decreased conversions and usability.

Prepare Images

Resize

Images should be re-sized so they are not larger than they need to be. Small sizes improves fast load time and accessibility. For specific sizes, visit Image Patterns

  1. In Photoshop
    1. File/Save For Web
      1. Adjust Image Size on bottom-right
  2. Resize/Crop images in OU: https://support.omniupdate.com/oucampus10/pages/edit/image-editor.html

Formats

Images should be converted to efficient formats.

  • Use .gif or .png for mostly graphical images
  • Use .jpg for photos
  • Compress .jpg images and strip metadata

Photoshop

    1. File/Save For Web
    2. Select image type in top right and view image size in bottom left
    3. if .jpg, select “Medium”

If you don’t have Photoshop, try Kraken.

Upload

Documents can be uploaded one at a time through the WYSIWYG, in bulk with a zip file, or using webdav to connect to the server. Upload permissions will be regulated.

publish

In OU, files are initially uploaded to the staging server. They will not be visible to the public until they are published to the live site.
