German Studies Language Placement

At Simon’s Rock, students are typically required to take one full-year sequence of a world language for the AA degree. German is one of the languages offered at Simon’s Rock that can fulfill this requirement. Accelerated Beginning German I and II are offered for absolute beginners. Students with some prior knowledge of German take the placement test and may qualify for Intermediate German I and II.

Incoming students with prior exposure to German can take the online placement test for German over the summer. The test covers reading and writing skills and is a good predictor of the student’s level of proficiency. Upon completion, test results are sent to the Registrar. Students can contact the Registrar’s Office to receive a recommendation and to discuss the course level that is recommended. They should realize, however, that hearing and speaking skills can only be tested in the presence of the instructor, and that these skills may affect placement. New students are also welcome to contact the professor for further information and discussion.
