Pesticides and Permaculture

Wednesday, February 24, 2016

Lecture Center

The Center for Food Studies is hosting a panel discussion about Pesticides and Permaculture: Traditional and Alternative Models of Farming. Panelist Michelle Mart, Associate Professor of History at Penn State University, will talk about her investigation of continued widespread pesticide use as chronicled in her book Pesticides, A Love Story: America's Enduring Embrace of Dangerous Chemicals. "Why - in the face of dire warnings, rising expense, and declining effectiveness - do we cling to our chemicals? Michelle Mart wondered. Her book, a cultural history of pesticide use in postwar America, offers an answer." (publisher website)

Panelist Josh Trought will talk about his work with holistic and sustainable farming. He is founder and director of D Acres, a farm-based education center in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and author of The Community-Scale Permaculture Farm.

Event is free and open to the public

Co-sponsored by Berkshire Grown, Community Land Trust, and the Monterey United Church of Christ.
