The Salon series provides alumni, parents, and friends with opportunities to get together and remain involved with the intellectual life of Simon's Rock. The evening will begin with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and conversation followed by a reading and discussion. We are proud to invite you to our fall salon series with Brendan Mathews.

Brendan Mathews, Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Literature, joined the faculty at Simon's Rock in 2007. His teaching and research interests include contemporary fiction, twentieth-century Ireland, the role of literature in the formation of national identity, the graphic novel, and short stories.

Brendan is the author of The World of Tomorrow, published by Little, Brown & Co. He was a Fulbright Scholar to Ireland, where he taught in the graduate creative writing program at University College Cork. His fiction has twice appeared in The Best American Short Stories and in Virginia Quarterly Review, Salon, Cincinnati Review, and other publications in the US and UK. He has been the recipient of grants and fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council,  Sustainable Arts Foundation, and the Sewanee Writers Conference. Born and raised in upstate New York, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his MFA from the University of Virginia.
